The BSR Program
What is the BSR Program?
The BSR journey started in May 2023 when we got a call from Renee, a kind-hearted woman from Shriners, who needed help for young kids being flown into our community from developing countries. These kids, born with serious facial and skull problems, would need many surgeries throughout their lives. The intense and painful procedures meant these kids were constantly on the move between hospitals and hotels, with no breaks in between. When Renee first reached out, we didn’t have a program specifically designed to meet their special needs.
Just three days later, a Boonshoft Medical student named Kyle Hua showed up at our office, along with his friend Omair Khan. They both shared a passion for bringing joy and hope to kids going through tough surgeries. They had a vision for a program that would be a beacon of light amidst these kids’ challenges.“
Their vision came to life with the birth of BSR, an acronym for Boonshoft, Shriners, and Ronald Macdonald, symbolizing the collaboration of these three remarkable organizations.
We eagerly reached out to Renee, who was about to receive a young patient from Pakistan who spoke only Urdu. As luck would have it, Omair, with his Pakistani heritage and fluency in Urdu, became the perfect link between the incoming child and our team. The following week, the child, accompanied by her father, joined Omair at our offices. Their presence filled the room with contagious laughter, a symphony of joy that soared above any language barriers.
The medical community at Boonshoft has since wholeheartedly embraced this program, recognizing its profound impact on these extraordinary children. Their unwavering commitment to providing support and creating moments of joy is truly heartwarming.
What Our BSR Program Provides Now
Our BSR program has now blossomed into a vibrant tapestry of cultures and resilience, with ten extraordinary children from diverse corners of the globe, each facing challenging surgical procedures. Despite the hurdles they must overcome, their spirits remain unbowed, and their laughter fills our spaces with warmth and joy.
Our BSR mentors, equally remarkable in their own right, have stepped up as beacons of support, providing not only academic tutoring and mentorship but also the soothing balm of music lessons, comforting apparel, and most importantly, an abundance of shared moments of joy and delight.
The love and hugs that envelop these children are a testament to the power of human connection, a lifeline that transcends language barriers and unites us in our shared humanity.
